Membrana 3L TC is a Stone Island performance fabric built around a very light three-layer laminated construction. It appears most often in technical outerwear.
What are the three layers?
Stone Island's current product descriptions explain the construction as an opaque nylon outer face laminated to a breathable, water-resistant membrane, with an extremely light polyester backing protecting the membrane on the inside.
What does TC mean here?
TC refers to garment dyeing. Stone Island dyes the assembled garment so the outer face receives the intended colour while the performance characteristics of the membrane are preserved.
Is Membrana 3L TC fully waterproof?
Stone Island describes current versions as water-resistant rather than simply using the fabric name as a blanket waterproof guarantee. Real-world protection also depends on garment construction, seams, closures, wear and condition.
Why condition matters so much on a laminated fabric
A three-layer fabric relies on the bond between layers. On a pre-owned garment, inspect the inside closely for bubbling, peeling, puckering or areas where the layers appear to have separated. Those signs are different from a face fabric simply losing its water-beading finish.
What should you check before washing a vintage or pre-owned example?

- Inspect the laminate before washing so you know its starting condition.
- Avoid copying care settings from another season or fabric just because the jacket looks similar.
